One of our favorite ways to vacation is a cruise. Cruises are hassle free, entertaining, totally self indulgent with the objective of our own pleasure. We go to relax, be refreshed and renewed. Sadly, so many people enter into marriage with the cruise ship expectation.
The cruise ship expectation in marriage is a shallow one which requires little training and preparation. Those who believe they are embarking on the Cruise Ship Marriage expect:
- To be served
- To have all needs met
- To be comfortable and complacent
- A pleasant experience
- No responsibilities
- No accountability
- To always like the captain
- It's all about me and my pleasure
The battleship expectation in marriage recognizes a mission and requires training and preparation. Husbands and wives who recognize they are embarking on a life long tour aboard the Battleship Marriage expect:
- To serve a higher authority
- To serve the mission of the ship
- To not always like the captain/crew, but work together
- To continue training for warfare
- To honor others for their efforts
Do you recognize a clear and noble mission in your marriage? When God created marriage, He created the smallest, most powerful battle formation. When a husband and wife recognize that together they face a very real enemy with the sole mission to kill, steal and destroy them, their marriage and family, they become a mighty force for God. The mission of your marriage is to reflect God and the gospel to the hurting world around you; in the course of that mission, there is a refining process of making each of you more Christlike.
Society has fostered a cruise ship marriage, while God is asking us to step aboard His battleship marriage to embark upon a real mission of confronting evil and rescuing souls. When your marriage reflects God and the gospel to those around you, you share the hope that is only found in Christ, equivalent to throwing a life ring to those drowning in the abyss of life without Christ.
When you embark on the journey of marriage with battleship expectation, everything changes. Your perspective matters. Success on the Battleship Marriage will require you to:
- Work together with your spouse
- View your spouse's differences as strengths
- Encourage your spouse
- Serve your spouse
- Equip your spouse
- Hold your spouse accountable
- Honor your spouse for his/her efforts
- Submit to the higher authority
- Sacrifice for the mission
Cruise ship satisfies the wants and comforts of now…the battleship sometimes forsakes temporary comforts for the eternal. Cruise ships are a great getaway, a great escape from the everyday and a time to relax, renew and refresh. But we can't live our marriage with a cruise ship mentality.
Husbands and wives who embark on the Cruise Ship Marriage may as well have stepped aboard the SS Minnow, destined for shipwreck when the storms of life come. Instead, recognize that you are stepping aboard Battleship Marriage, choose to accept Your Mission and commit to seeing it to fruition.
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. -2 Timothy 2:3, 4, NKJV
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. -Ephesians 6:11-13
