What I am about to say may initially upset you or challenge your beliefs... but please don’t stop reading. Instead, come with me as I walk through a word from God that I trust will change the way you see Him, yourself and the situations in your life! God gives little thought to the troubles in your life! He does not care about the situations in our life! He not concerned when your spouse acts inappropriately or about your financial problems! He doesn’t care about major illnesses or any other of the things that cause His people to panic or become worried. I know, I know, but keep reading....
One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they started out. As they were sailing, Jesus fell asleep. Suddenly a strong wind blew down on the lake, and the boat began to fill with water, so that they were all in great danger. The disciples went to Jesus and woke him up, saying, “Master, Master! We are about to die!”
Jesus got up and gave an order to the wind and to the stormy water; they quieted down, and there was a great calm. Then he said to the disciples, “Where is your faith?” ~Luke 8:22-25
The disciples are in a very dangerous situation, aren't they? A situation that their Master had put them in...after all HE said 'let us go across to the other side of the lake.' And what was He doing? Sleeping. Jesus was sleeping while his disciples were panicking, crying out 'Master, Master! We are about to die!' Jesus, Himself, is in the boat and He is within arm’s reach but He showed absolutely no concern for the wind or waves. Oh, sure, once they woke Him up, He calmed the storm but then what does He say to them? He doesn’t apologize to them or console them. When He speaks, He places blame on them for not having enough faith by asking “Where is your faith?”
The Reality: Now, I know I have painted a horrible picture of Jesus and before you think that I have a very twisted view of God, let me turn this around! I do not believe God is unloving to His people! If fact, today, I believe He gave this verse to me as a great reflection of how we react during the storms we float into and how OUR REACTIONS, NOT OUR PROBLEMS burden Him.
Over the past decade, I have learned that God is more concerned about my heart than my situation so I was not surprised when, as I prayed about what to write, over and over He responded to my request with this statement.
“I don’t care about any of your problems BECAUSE I already have them all taken care of, BUT I am concerned when you don’t have enough faith to trust me to take care of you”
Which one are you?
Like a Disciple: Now, the story does not say anything about the length of time that they were sailing or how long the storm was raging but what it does say about the disciples speaks volumes! I’m sure they didn’t just sit there as the storm began. I believe they probably began doing everything in their power to fight the waves before turning to Jesus when their attempts were unsuccessful. Once all hope was gone for them to save themselves, they panicked! They began fearing for their lives even though the One they had seen heal the sick, open the eyes of the blind and perform many other miracles was right there with them and within arm’s reach!
Like Jesus: If we are to believe that Jesus was both the son of God and the son of Mary (both a heavenly and human), then we have to believe that He would be susceptible to feeling fear, worried, guilt and would have felt pain. Believing you would agree with this statement, why it is that He didn’t show these emotions when He woke up in a boat ready to sink? I say, Jesus didn’t panic because He was fully aware of His power as a child of God and He was so secure in the Father’s love that the storm did not scare Him!
God does see your adulterous/alcoholic/prodigal spouse, your financial troubles and your illnesses, but these things do not cause Him concern! These things don't cause Him concern because He knows where you are going, why you are in the boat with Jesus and how He is going to calm the storm. He made a promise to never leave you and He has the power to back it up.
So I ask you “Where is your Faith?”
