"[Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." ~1 Corinthians 13:7-8 NIV But what happens when trust is broken? What happens when the relationship fails?
In a previous blog, I shared that love is something we should always give and receive fully, but trust is something that must be earned.
This will be one of those posts that is based more on experience than scripture, although scripture proves it to be true.
Our marriage was just about at its lowest point. I was having a huge problem loving my wife - at all. I had completely "lost that loving feeling." Likewise, she had pretty much lost all respect for me. Quite frankly, I didn't deserve her respect.
Neither of us trusted the other. We didn't know how to get back on track, but we knew we wanted to. Then a mentor and friend issued us a 30-day challenge. At first it seemed impossible. We didn't think it would work. What was it?
Always say yes.
No matter what our spouse asks of us - or when. Always say yes.
There was a caveat, however. Before asking anything of the other person, we were to make sure that our intentions were healthy. That our reason for making a request of our spouse was with their best interest in mind. Now that seemed rather scary at the time. But we agreed.
That 30-day challenge was issued over 10 years ago. We've never stopped saying yes.
It became the foundation on which a powerful trust was rebuilt within our relationship. I don't have to even wonder what my wife's motives are when she asks me for something, or to do something. I now know she has already taken the time to consider me before presenting her request. And you know why this works so well? It's a biblical scriptural principle. CHALLENGE: If you are struggling with trust in your marriage, or if you just want to increase the level of trust within your marriage, I encourage you to try this with your spouse. Give it 30 days and see what happens!
