50% of all marriages end in divorce. Right?
That's kind of a long-standing statistic, but is it really true? A new book by Shaunti Feldhahn and Tally Whitehead indicates this is just NOT the case! This book, titled The Good News About Marriage - available next month - will challenge, with great detail and evidence, what many have come to consider fact. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a full copy!
Christian Marriage vs. Non-Christian Marriage?
And, statistically speaking, "Christian" marriages don't do any better than "non-Christian," right?
Again, Feldhahn and Whitehead found that is not entirely the case. Or hardly the case at all when you really extrapolate the data.
Projected vs. Current Divorce Rate?
What is the difference between "projected" divorce rate and "current" divorce rate? Why does that matter? How about because the current (actual) divorce rate has never reached what was "projected." And yet the trend has always been to declare marriage to be on the decline. Hmm...what's up with that?
Are there any happy marriages out there?
Here's another area you might find interesting. On average, what is the percentage of Americans who would say they have a "happy" marriage? I'll give you a hint - it's higher than you might think. Probably much higher! What kind of impact does that have on the next generation, currently considering whether marriage is for them? It could be very significant! From Shaunti's website:
In The Good News About Marriage, best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn presents groundbreaking research that reveals the shocking, incredibly inspiring truth:
- The actual divorce rate has never gotten close to 50 percent.
- Those who attend church regularly have a significantly lower divorce rate than those who don’t.
- Most marriages are happy.
- Simple changes make a big difference in most marriage problems.
- Most remarriages succeed.
For too long, our confidence in marriage has been undermined by persistent misunderstandings and imperfect data. This landmark book will radically change how we think and talk about marriage—and what we can dare to hope from it.
Conversation around this book has already started trending in philosophical and academic circles because it challenges a lot of assumptions and supposed data that has become widely accepted as fact. I got somewhat of a sneak peek last week, and I'm really excited to see what God will do through the careful research and presentation. It really is GOOD news!
