Romans 8:28 is a scripture we’ve probably all quoted, all clung to at times.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Take Cathy, for instance. This is a lady I've recently come to know. For twenty-six years, she lived with a dysfunctional, abusive, alcoholic husband. Throughout that time, she clung to Romans 8:28 while not always fully believing it. Cathy prayed daily for her husband, Craig, but over time her hope for any sort of meaningful relationship with him waned. Then, through a life-threatening illness in August of 2012, Craig was practically “forced” to get clean & sober - it was pretty much sober up or die!
A few months later, even though things were still not going great, they attended a Weekend to Remember getaway. During the weekend, Craig heard of his need for a Savior and gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ. He heard, for the first time, that God had a blueprint for marriage, and in that moment decided to begin implementing that blueprint. His life and their marriage were forever changed!
But that’s just the start! They’ve since begun hosting marriage conferences in their own home and church, watching God transform the lives and marriages of others. They’ve become marriage-focused small group leaders in their church and also lead a marriage ministry effort in their own community.
Let’s face it. We all go through times when Romans 8:28 seems more like a fairytale than even a possibility. Yet Craig and Cathy are an example of how tangible that promise of God is! His Word is true, His promises unfailing. God is in the resurrection and redemption business. He loves to do what we believe to be impossible.
My wife and I are approaching our 23rd anniversary, and as I look back, I see it: God's hand reaching in, holding us fast even when we couldn't see Him - or how. We've gone through some really painful stuff! He is continually re-shaping, re-purposing the worst of us to illuminate the best of Him!
Even now, our family is going through some difficult times. But like Cathy, we can hold on to Romans 8:28 and know with all certainty that as we continue to relinquish our marriage, our family, and ourselves to God, He will work all this out, not only for His glory but for our good.
