We've all engaged in the battle of the cookie, haven't we? It's there, the aroma calling out to me, reminding me of its chewy gooey goodness, and how I could have just one to satisfy my craving. So I agree, yes, I could have just one chocolate chip cookie. After all, it's just a cookie, it's not the whole batch, hot from the oven, right?
A tall glass of milk and three cookies later, I realized I'd rationalized myself to losing that battle. Do you think you can't control what you think? Au contraire, you can and you must! You've heard that you are what you eat, and indeed, you are (and you are becoming) what you think!
It is all about your thought life- therein lies the battle. THAT is why God's Word speaks so firmly and extensively about what you put in your head and what you allow to stay there, because what you think matters. What you think frames your world; where your mind goes, the rest of you will follow. Your thoughts don't have to be true to hurt you or lead you, believing them is what gives them power. If you believe your marriage will fail, that your spouse will never change, or that you cannot do something, you will be right. What you think and believe has power and determines your actions.
FOCUS: Back in 2004, after submitting my life to Jesus Christ, I started to see things in my life and marriage that needed to change. I had a choice- to focus on where my marriage was going based on the past 13 years, or to pursue God's Word, meditate on it, and change the course of our marriage. Learning that my husband was steeped in adultery, I faced a fork in the road. I could focus on what the world says or I could learn what God says and focus on that. WHAT YOU FOCUS ON DEVELOPS. I chose to focus on God's Word, meditating on it, letting it transform my mind to line up with God's thoughts and ways which are so much higher than mine.
DISCERN: You do not have to think about whatever pops into your head. The thoughts that pop into your head are like a person stepping into your house- determine if they are friend or foe- then act accordingly, taking thoughts not from God captive, and pursuing godly thoughts which renew your mind.
Inasmuch as we refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the true knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ. - 2 Corinthians 10:5
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. -Philippians 4:8
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. -Romans 12:1-3
Your thought life matters.
God changed our lives, marriage and legacy when I chose to change my thoughts. As I pursued God's thoughts, they changed my words; as my words changed, my actions changed, eventually leading to a marriage beyond my wildest dreams because I planted the indestructible seed of God's Word in my heart and mind. God's Word is no respecter of persons- it is true for you, too. If you pursue God's thoughts, they will change your words. As your words change, so will your actions. As your actions change, they become your new habits. As your habits change, they become your new character. Your new character becomes your destiny.
